Cinquefoils means literally "five leaves". A cinquefoils on a coat of arms is a five leafed floral design. They do, indeed, stand for hope and joy, as Alatea pointed out, so DO give her some points.

It might also be noted that the cinquefoil is sometimes called a "fraise" (this means a strawberry flower), usually in a "canting context" (this means when you want to make a pun on the name of the person with the coat-of-arms, for example the last name Frasier).
