  • Whole-Grain breads are the best for you in nutrient content because of the fact that the Whole Grain has been used in the making of the bread and certain nutrients have not been processed out. If you prefer a lighter flavor, there are wheat breads (and others) that are not whole-grain. Besides the fact of having more nutrients available, it has been suggested that whole-grain breads and cereals are good for the heart and conducive to a longer life. Different varieties of non-white breads include Wheat, Rye, and Oatmeal to name a few. The oatmeal and wheat breads are milder in flavor than rye; although, you can often find "lite" rye bread at your favorite supermarket and it is milder in flavor. Flax seed bread may be found at healthfood stores and is mild and nutty in flavor. Multi-Grain breads are one of my favorites and sometimes have seeds such as flax seed, sunflower seed, sesame, and caraway seeds which are all good for you; particularly flax seed because of the essential fatty acids they contain. Another benefit of whole-grain breads is the fiber content which is oftentimes 2 grams per serving as opposed to 1 gram with white. Live Healthy!
  • I agree with the first answer that whole grain breads are better, but I would not at all say that white bread is not good for you. It simply isn't as good as whole grain breads. If you were to restrict your diet solely to white bread, that would be bad. But no one eats one food alone. White bread is fortified with vitamins and minerals and as part of a balanced diet, it is fine.
  • You can also eat sprouted grain breads. Especially those who deal with gluten intolerance, this is a good option (sometimes, depends on the extent of the health problems. Silver Hills is a company that makes excellent sprouted grain breads.
  • There is some good information here with some of the answers and comments. A little note: many grocery store, so-called "wheat breads" that are brown in color, actually are made mostly with white flour. They have a coloring added to make them look darker and a very small quantity of whole grain. It is the commercial pretense of offering wholesome healthy food, when in fact, it actually is disguised white bread.
  • White bread is white due to a refining process. When bread is refined it has all fiber, vitamins and minerals removed therefore making it white. Fiber slows the digestion process and stops all the carbohydrates from "hitting the bloodstream" all at once. Also this digestion slowing process that fiber performs is far, far better for you in terms of preventing weight gain. The speed in which white bread is digested is too fast for the body to burn all the calories it produces. The fiber provides a slower release of these calories enabling you to burn energy at a steady rate. Enriched bread is simply refined bread which has the vitamins and minerals put back into the bread. The enrichment process does not put back in the fiber that the refinement removed.
  • Whole grain breads are the best! Rye, whole wheat, all of the grains, 12 grain, 9 grain, etc. However,careful with your portions of bread daily and your food combining. I assume you are looking to eat healthy overall. There's a great book called "The Body Ecology". There is so much information in there as well as to the answer if you want to even want to eat bread!   • We found a very tasty sliced bread in the freezer section of our grocery called "Ezekiel" bread. There's a few different varieties. It's a very pure, organic bread with whole grains. I didn't think I'd like it at first 'cause it seemed like some tree-hugging, tasteless, organic fruu-fruu food, you know? But wow, it's really good! http://www.foodforlife.com/
  • There is a bread brand called "Oroweat" that makes something called "Cracked Wheat" bread. It looks and tastes similar to white bread, but it's not. It has oats on the top of it. It's pretty good and would recommend it. Been using it for years now.
