They both have their place. The original is great and nostalgic. Due to technology the remake is wonderful. I do not see need to chose one as better than the other using some arbitrary sense of value.
-
My favourite was the remake, I thought it was closer to the novel. Except Johnny Depp reminded me of Michael Jackson too much!
-
I like the original best.
-
The original was way better, as much as I like some of Johnny Depp's stuff, the new Chocolate factory movie sucked badly.
-
I like the original. I think that is usually the case with remakes. There is nothing like the classics!
-
Johnny Depp was the creepiest candyman ever.... I don't really like the remake.... I love the Original!!!!!
-
depends on my mood. I love the classic one but the newer one is funny.
-
Johnny Depp turned that into an acid trip, in my opinion the original was perfect.
-
The original was much better IMHO. The remake was a big disappointment.
-
i really like johnny depp but that remake was not very good, he seemed scary. i prefer the original.
-
There were certain elements that I liked from each film, but I really liked the Johnny Depp version.
-
Gene Wilder's is a CLASSIC. I my opinion, Gene Wilder IS Willy Wonka, and always will be. But Johnny Depp's WAS a good remake. They made it a totally different movie, as opposed to trying to turn Johnny Depp into Gene Wilder 2.0... I really liked that. I like both movies... but when I think of the Candy Man, it's Gene Wilder, no doubt.
-
I would have to go with the Johnny Depp remake because the special effects were more in keeping with the book.
-
Gene Wilder made Willy Wonka. The production and songs on the original made it great. Johnny Depp's version is good, too, but much ... "creepier". Depends on my mood, and if kids were watching too, which I'd want to see at the time.
-
The original was more in tune with the theme. Although from what I understand the writer did not like the movie at all. The remake was darker and more driven by the dysfunctional life of the character played by Depp. I'll stick with the original which was lighter and cute.
-
I was very surprised that I enjoy the new one, I do not usually like Tim Burton's work. But I really do like the first one better, Gene Wilder was wonderful.
-
Gene Wilder, no contest.
-
Oh the original is a classic. So much more sweeter even though it didn't really follow the book. The remake was clever and contemporary but 'my god'!! those ooppaa loommpaa songs were so cheesy...I'd see them and I'd be like noooooooo!!!!!!!!!
-
I hated the remake, I thought the background was the same as the War of the worlds. I saw both movies the same week and was totally grossed out by all the red background, it looked totally disgusting to me. :(
-
I liked both... though if you read the book... the second one is more "in tune" with it... But seeing as Gene Wilder was first, and that was the one that I grew up with, I would have to go with his.
-
The remake, definitely. I can't sit through the original.
-
Johnny Depp's version all the way.
-
Of course it's the remake that is better!
-
I'm surprised so many people think the Johnny Depp version was "creepier". I found that it kind of came out and whacked you over the head with its creepiness where as the Gene Wilder version had a subtle implied creepiness about it that was much more unsettling to me. It's kind of like the difference between seeing a snake on display at the zoo in all its creepy glory and walking through tall grass knowing that somewhere in that grass is a snake, you know? That being said, I'm not usually a remake kinda gal and thought the Tim Burton version would pale next to the original, but was pleasantly surprised. They are two completely different movies, unlike so many remakes which try (for whatever obscure reason) to recreate their predecessor. I do like the Gene Wilder version better, but they are both a lot of fun!
-
The original with Gene Wilder it just fit him so well, sorry the remake with Johnny Depp is creepy, the oompa loomps gave me nightmares.
-
The original by FAR! I don't know why they thought they should make another one. I know it wasn't exactly the same, but what was the point. Okay, and Johnny Depp (I'm really not a fan.. but..) he freaked me out. He was so creepy!!! I felt awful, bad, icky and disturbed after watching it. It took a LONG time to get that feeling out of my system... I wish I never saw it. EVER. It was horriffic. Ech... thinking about that makes me a bit uneasy. AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!
-
The original was the best!
-
I Think The Remake With Johnny Was So Much Better. It Was Much Better With Color And Songs. And Johnny Depp Played The Role Better Than Gene Wilder.

-
The original was much better. It had more of a mystical, magical and fictional tone. The newer one just had a creepy pedofile-like tone. I didn't like it so much.
-
Original.
-
i'd say the original with gene wilder is my favourite but i enjoyed watching the johnny depp remake too.the part on the boat going through the tunnel in the original and there are images flashing on the wall, one is a chicken having its head chopped off ,used to scare me.had to hide behind cushion for that part when i was younger.
-
I prefer the original, I guess I'm a sentimental fool!
-
The Original is better.
-
Defo the first! I love it... The new ones a bit scary! :S
-
While I enjoyed the original, I really prefer Johnny Depp's version better. It's a little dark, but so was the book. I just find it to be more entertaining, on the whole.
-
I actually think the first one was scarier, I like the remake more.
-
Original. Johnny Depp looks sorta gay in the remake.
-
I thought the original was much better.
-
Apples and Oranges. I liked both.
-
Most definitely, the original.
-
Ah defintely the original :)
-
