This is the age old question of the Tootsie Pop. I think the only real answer to this question is, "The world may never know."
-
I think this answer will have to be an "average". I keep getting to the center with a different number of "licks".
-
There are several factors, needless to say, even if it's the same person counting, the # of licks will differ at each attempt. If you wanted to look at it semi-scientifically, the number of licks needed depend on these factors: * Pressure per square inch the tongue is applied to the surface of the tootsie pop (TP) * The average amount of square inch in contact between tongue and TP * At what measurement from the center of the stick of the TP at which you declare that you have reached the center of the TP. * The rotation factor of the TP - if the eater continues to lick one specific portion only to reach the center faster - or if licks are distributed evenly around the outer surface area of TP. And to a lesser extent: * Ambient temperature * Use of teeth / or lack of teeth of eater * Hunger of TP eater * Boredom of TP eater * Age of TP

One, a twooo-hooo, three... <CRUNCH!> Three.

I like ate 70 tootsie pops to come up with this answer and i finally got it!! I never realized how hard it was to resist biting it LMAO!! The answer is 1203 licks.... crunch but my licks are small tho! lol!!!
-
One more factor to consider. The actual quote is "How many licks does it take to get to the TOOTSIE ROLL center of a Tootsie Pop?" SOOOOO To GET TO the chocolate takes FAR less effort than trying to dig through the Tootsie roll portion itself. *Test 1* Licked pop with a flat tongue until smooth chocolate surface could be felt with teeth. *Result 1* 297 licks *Test 2* Utilized a full-mouth lick, therefore achieving a forward AND backward, if not as strong, eroding motion for each lick. *Result 2* appx. 250 licks note- The above is approximate, because the chocolate actually appeared first on the back side of the Pop, an event that I simply was not prepared for. However, I have good news: I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance by switching to Geiko.
-
well, ive only counted once, in 3rd grade, but I got 864 licks.
-
My daughter and my nephew answered this. She counted; he licked. It took 750 licks. Now the world definitely knows.
-
The number of licks does not actually determine how quickly you get to the center of a Tootsie Pop but rather it is determined by how much salivary amylase makes contact with the surface of the Tootsie Pop. The amylase breaks down the structure of the Tootsie Pop so that it can be used as energy for the body.
-
As many as it takes
-
10,056,183 licks! I counted them myself because I was extremely bored. Of course, it all depends on how you lick the Tootsie Pop.
-
It took me 1380 licks to get to the center of my tootsie pop. My tongue was sore by the time i finished.
-
Pongky had a great answer by the way Several groups have actually conducted scientific experiments to see how many licks it took. A few groups actually invented "licking machines" to emulate a human tongue licking the tootsie pop. Hope this clears up all the confusion. * A group of engineering students from Purdue University recorded that their licking machine, modeled after a human tongue, took an average of 364 licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop. They tried the same licking test on 20 volunteers and found that the average licks to the center were 252 licks. * A chemical engineering doctorate student from the University of Michigan recorded that his licking machine required an average of 411 licks per Tootsie Pop. * A group of students at Swathmore School used human lickers in a scientific experiment and determined it took an average of 144 licks to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop.

-
http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/443 Licks and sucks or just straight licks?Because I think that would take awhile, maybe 200-300 licks at least.
-
http://www.gwax.com/content/tootsiepop.html Evidently from this "research" it depends on a lot of things. Somebody has WAY too much time on their hands. lol
-
Sorry, already asked. http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/443 And answered.
-
My friend and I tried to count once when we were in sixth grade, but neither of us managed to finish without biting it. We each got to about 300 licks and had about half of each of the suckers left. one, two, three, crunch...the world may never know!
-
depends on your tongue action!!!!
-
after like 8 licks i stopped counting and bit the damn thing
-
One, Two, Three, *crunch*, three.
-
no, but i would think about 1000, or more...depending on the pop....
-
I would assume it depends on how large your tongue is so as to how much tootsie roll pop area you cover with one lick as well as how much saliva you have as it would break down the tootsie roll pop faster. I would say there's not one set answer, different for different tootsie-roll-poppers.
-
ive actullay counted before (I was really bored in music class and the teacher gave out tootsie pops)I dont remember the exact number, and i did just bite the miidle/chocolate part but it was like 2,300!
-
If you are Giraffe, one.
-
well, me and my friends tried that as an experiment for fifth grade science. it didn't really work, because it depended on the lollypop, the size of your tongue, and how big the center of the lollypop was (you know, the ones with gum and stuff in them).
-
412.7 but, since you cannot have a partial lick, round up to 413. The average time is 8 minutes, 48 seconds. http://www.emptyv.org/tootsierollpop.htm http://www.tootsie.com/howmany-sb.html
-
Yes actually I have but it's varried. I can't remeber them at the time, but I think it depends on what kind of licks, and how much saliva one has one their tounge.
-
Yeah, me and my niece did. It took like 50 licks.
-
I did once, a long, long time ago. Until I realized 3/4 of the way through "Damn it! I forgot to keep counting somewhere in between 5 and 8 hundred..."
-
i tried it but it took too loooooooooong like more than an hour so i quit :)
-
no, i usually suck on my suckers... not lick them, my cousin did it once and she said it took 75 licks.
-
527,040 licks, i was very creative
-
0. I don't lick lollypops, I usually suck on them, and after about five minutes, I say, "f**k this" and I eventually just completely bite into it.

-
Two. Lick, lick, CRUNCH!
-
hahaahha i was going to ask that question.. but i came up with 250..
-
I thought it was a Tootsie-pop...
-
The world may never know
-
The same amount it takes to finish one.
-
It depends on: 1) the length of your tongue 2) the amount of force applied by your tongue 3) the amount of saliva (and enzymes) on your tongue 4) the size of the lollypop 5) the ingredients/hardness of the lollypop You would also need to identify the exact center of the lollypop...and the length of your tongue so you can measure your licks to an accurate decimal. Oh, and each lick would need to be the same length for consistancy. :)

It's one of the Eternal Mysteries of the Universe... . .

On the average of most experiments, it is an average of exactly 144 licks.
-
I guess it depends on who's licking
-
I have never had patience for such things....2 or 3 good chomps and there is the tootsie roll center. My dentist is glad I have no patience....LOL
-
Ah, one... Ah, two... Ah, threee... CRUNCH! Three. LOL. I loved that commercial. Actually, it would take several hundred. Here is a link to some experiments on the subject. http://www.tootsie.com/memoriesLicksMachine.html

I'll give it a go--177 tested and confirmed at the lab In Washington DC
-
I actually did it once when I was little but I forgot.

-
My mom actually counts, it has taken her 283 to 297 licks She says that is also depends on if the candy is evenly centered in the middle of the lollipop.
-
NONE! Just bite it!!!!
-
I think the best/most scientifc way to find out would be to gather 100 people with alot of time on their hands, and of varying ages. First off sit down and debate the definition of a ´lick´. once ascertained, get up, sit down and this time debate the defintion of getting to the middle. Next phone an impartial professional, like maybe the local Judge and ask him/her to officiate the findings. Give half of the 100 people lunch. Next using the agreed defintions, give all 100 people 3 tootsie roll pops each, and get them to test 3 times. Finally, gather all the results and ascertain the average. Pay each tester 25 pounds for their help, and slap each in the face with a wet fish for being so stupid and having too much free time. Then slap yourself for going through with the whole thing.
-
1.2.3..... How many licks does it really take to get to the center of a totside pop? The world may never know!

I don't lick. I suck it... and then, if I get impatient, I bite it.
-
It's not three...trust me its a lot of licks
-
According to the commercial: 10. Remember the one with the guy that licked it twice and then CHOMPED? He said, "1,2,10!"

According to the official site, www.tootsie-roll.com , there is no one definite answer to this question. The answer differs from person to person and depends on factors such as mouth size and amount of saliva. However, an experiment conducted by a group of school students showed an average of 144 licks.
-
Just one. Keep it in your mouth the whole time.
