  • Although genetic sex (XX or XY) is determined at fertilization, the embryo's gender is not distinguishable for the first six weeks of development; this is known as the indifferent period of development http://ibis-birthdefects.org/start/hermaphr.htm During the earliest development only examination of the chromosomes will tell us the (karyotypic) gender of the embryo. When the gonads appear at about the 6th post-conception week, they are neither testes or ovaries (i.e. they are "undifferentiated gonads"). But soon differences appear, triggered by the presence or absence of "testis determining factor" (TDF) which is protein coded for by the sry gene on the Y chromosome. http://academic.sun.ac.za/med_physbio/med_physiology/dept/Life08.html
  • Let me clear that up a little. Usually it will take about 4-5 months until they can determine the sex.
  • the doctor should be able to tell you when you are 20 weeks..or 5 months
  • you can find out around 20 weeksz
  • most of the time the docs know for sure in most cases, at or around 4 months your 2nd trimester. but i have known alot of women who have had chocolate cravings and or peanut butter when pregnant with a girl?!
  • when i was pregnant with my daughter they would have been able to tell at 5 months but seeing as she was shy and made sure her legs where crossed they were unable to tell untill she popped out. but they can usually tell at 5 months.
  • I was told 18 weeks but the sex of my baby was determined @ 19 weeks
  • I have four kids and a angel baby. I was told as early as 15 weeks, but usually more like 18-20. I on the other hand only found out with one and that was at 30 wks! So a lot depends on the position of your baby and how much room it has(size of you and baby) etc.
  • I found out at 15 weeks by amniocentesis it was really expensive but definately worth it as it is 99& accurate.
  • maximun by 20 weeks, but it can be earlier!
  • For ultrasound only: By the 12th week of pregnancy, most babies have distinctly male or female genitals, and ultrasound can provide a good view of the sex organs if the baby happens to be in the right position. A 1999 study published in Ultrasound Obstetrics and Gynecology found that ultrasound was about 70 percent accurate at determining gender in the 11th week. By the 12th week, accuracy jumps to nearly 99 percent. By the 13th week, a good ultrasound picture is extremely accurate. - I was 14 weeks 3 days when they seen the 3 lines for girl and they were correct. However, most doctors/techs won't say before the 18th+ scan, even though it can be seen earlier.
