  • I've read that's it's a nostalgia thing. Kittens get milk by their mothers by pressing against their mother with one paw and then the other. When adult cats do this, it reminds her of her mother when she was a kitten.
  • Making biscuits. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kneading_%28cats%29
  • They are trying to stimulate you to produce milk!
  • The generally accepted name for it is "Kneading". It's an instinctive response left over from their days as nursing kittens. When a mother cat's litter settles in to nurse, they knead the area around their mother's teats that same way to stimulate the mammary glands and facillitate a steadier flow of milk. Or to put more of a surrealist spin on it: They're trying to milk you.
  • Kittens get milk by nursing from their mother. They press against their mother with one paw and then the other. This is called "kneading". Kneading helps the mother cat give milk to the kittens. When adult cats knead with her paws, it reminds her of her mother when she was a kitten.
  • it gives them a good feeling, as the others have said. It is the equivalent of hugging and kissing.
  • Had a great short video on this exact topic - but in Windows Media Player format...DEEPTISS.wmv..
  • What is it...bloody painful if she has her nails out.
  • It's what they do when they are kittens as they are suckling, it increases the blood supply and the milk flow to the mother's teet. Then I think it probably just stays with them, like a comfort thing.
  • ROTFL! We call it "making bisquits". They are happy and content when they do that.
  • When my cat does that I just feel like she wants to make the point that: I matter so little to her she will use me as a scratching post occasionally whenever the mood hits.
  • I think most have touched on this already, but it does go back to kitten behavior of nursing. that is how they stimulate milk flow from their momma. it carries over into adulthood...cats do it when they are content with the people they feel close to and safe with. they are showing affection!
  • It was used in there childhood to get milk from there mommies,to nurse,it carries over into adulthood. She is showing that she loves me.
  • I call it "prumming" because of the sound of the purring they make when they do this. It is a sign of affection from kittenhood nursing habits. LOL @ the way your phrased the question +
  • LMAO bad drugs....they do it on soft or squishy things it's kinda like their way of saying they're comfortable. Mine love 2 do it on my boobs.
  • You're being milked like they used to do to mommy.
  • well the poor cat must think its still a kitten and thinks your the mom of it.poor cat :-(
  • It is called making biscuits. When they were nursing, they would knead mom's nipple to get milk. It's a nice way for them to say I Love You
  • Drugs????? No it's because they are happy. They do this when they are kittens to get more milk from there mother. It is called kneading or treading. ( I'm a total cat luver!)
  • Cats 'knead' - or as it's sometimes called 'making-breads' (amongst other things...)because they are content or happy. It is a sign that your cat is accepting of you as its guardian. When cats are kittens, they paw - or knead their mother as a way of announcing that they want milk. This behaviour is often carried over into adulthood - particularly in house-cats. Some people believe that cats do this to mark their territory, as many knead blankets, soft furnishings, etc. Rarely do cats knead a hard surface, but are known to 'stamp' on the surface in a similar fashion.
  • i encourage my cat to do it on my shoulder and back, and it's almost like getting a massage. sometimes he even drools when he does it. he's in the zone.
  • I have 7cats, the kneading thing as you all call it, its because when the mother cat has kittens they have to stimerlate the the nipple of the mother to get the milk come out, so when thy are kneading you on the back or the arm or were ever, thy are just doing wot thy did when thy were kittens and yes thy do dribble aswel
  • playing piano
  • playing piano
  • playing piano
  • they are kneeding - its a kitten thing - kind of like a Linus security blanket or sucking your thumb
  • THAT MEANS THEY LOVE YOU AND THEY ARE VERY COMFY IN YOUR PRESENCE THINK ABOUT IT EVER WATCH A KITTEN SUCK FOR MILK THEY MAKE THE SAME KNEEDING MOTIONS ON THERE MOTHERS BELLY IT JUST MEANS YOUR VERY SPECIAL TO THEM LIKE A PARENT
  • It means they're happy. My cat does this when I pick him up because he is a cuddly cat. I call it "making bread" when a cat does this. I have a younger cat as well, and when she's laying on me, she'll do a variation of this where instead of digging in her claws, she'll lift one of her front legs alternately, like she's giving you a massage :)
  • Dont listen to all this milking as a kitten stuff....I have a cat and I know. You answered in the question......All cats have a secret desire to play the piano and they try to practice thier skills when ever they can. My cat even uses his own candle arbra ( ooh that aint spelt right) which he places down beside him before he starts playing. Have you ever been to a piano concert? Half the audience are cats? They start with chopsticks as kittens and by the time they hit cat puberty they are playing Mozart AND Beethoven. Ever wonder where your cat goes at night ? Some guy in California put a small webcam on his cats collar and published the results on U tube. The cat left and went to nearby bush whgere he dug up his Tuxedo and bow tie. He hailed a cab and went to a piano concert aftr stopping to pick up several friends. Its true.........oops 16.00 time for my medication lol Sorry , I hope you dont mind, your question put an image in my mind of cats playing the piano that i just could not shake
  • Some people call it 'paddy-pawing', it's another way that cats have to show affection for their humans. Best not to scold a cat for doing this, you'll drive them away.
