The sun gives daylight, although when the clouds thicken and grow taller, sunlight is not able to pass through the cloud as easily.

If you read chapter 1 of Genisis in the Bible you will read Yahweh created light before He made the sun, the moon, and the stars. The sun gives us warmth, but light was beforehand. Noone is for sure what light is.
