★Stevo would you say its a tv term like the Paul Hogan made up saying "I'll put an extra shrimp on the barbie for ya" they used to make me say that all the time even thou they were prawns netted from the river usually boiled in water then thrown in ice . I Iiked the the Jessie Duke term "the place looks like a bunch of carpet baggers have been thru here." we were working at a hotel where they expected the guests to rip something off the wall. -
dalcocono It was a post civil war/ reconstruction era term for the opportunists who packed a carpet bag suitcase ahd headed south to reap the profits from the post war economy, usually at the expense of the residents. It became "slur" or and insulting term to use on people perceived as "yankees" for decades after the war ended. The Dukes of Hazzard were good ol' southern boys" representing the confederacy. I haven't heard it spoken in years, except in old movies or tv shows. I think it might be a bit different than "throw another shrimp on the barbie" though

In US Politics, a carpetbagger is still used as an outsider or opportunist.
