Absolutely. Winter here usually starts around Halloween and ends abruptly around Easter. Usually, by Christmas, we are under at least two feet of snow, it's dark almost all of the time, and temperatures are low enough that your breath forms a mask over your own face. This year has been the exception: we had a heat wave blow through that melted all of the snow and it flooded most of the lower areas, and now it's back in the teens (Fahrenheit), turning some of the valley towns into ice rinks.
