  • The US could do a lot simply by creating much stricter federal laws regarding sales of firearms. As it is now, state laws prevail - and some states (Florida is notorious, unless things have changed since I last read about this) can sell firearms at "gun shows" with very little oversight. Illegal gun dealers from New York and other states regularly purchase bulk firearms in Florida and then (illegally) transport them to New York for illegal sale to criminals. *** SO: if you controlled firearm sales in the same way - for example - that you controlled sales of prescription medicine, or alcohol (in some states strictly controlled), you'd have a lot more oversight. The (legal) gun-dealers would be under a lot more scrutiny, and so the illegal gun dealers would have a much more difficult time getting their hands on guns. *** So, basically: a nationwide law that requires strict laws on sale of firearms. *** I believe the reason it hasn't happened yet is because it is unconstitutional, so probably an Amendment would be needed to control gun sales in such a strict manner.

I'm not talking about taking them away. I'm talking about making everyone have to pass background checks and so-on, not just the honest buyer.

Throw in a psych evaluation and I'm in!
  • Controlling who gets to have guns and who does not always involves taking gun rights away from someone or other. In places like Australia and the UK, it seems like people were more flexible about yielding those rights. In the USA, however, we've been much more cynical about the government's motives.

No they took our guns if you didn't hand them in pigs showed up at your house and took them. Lots of old hunters now have criminal records.

Sounds to me like the situation stevo is in is what causes good law abiding citizens to turn into criminals. So has crime decreased? Do people still kill each other without the guns?
  • The answer to your question is to encourage people to VOLUNTARILY turn them in. But your premise is all wrong. Guns are not the issue. There needs to be better mental health care and intervention for those with issues. Here, guns have proved to stop crimes in some instances. A valiant citizen with a gun stopped a mass murder spree in Texas. You can't blame the gun. If people don't have guns they'll figure out another way if they want to kill someone. But there is a big problem with turning your guns in to the government. It gives you no means of defending yourself against THEM!
