  • The light of the sun makes the hair look bright but the heat of the sun makes the skin look darker because of the reaction from the heat.
  • Skin is alive, and produces more melanin (the coloring in both skin and hair) in response to sun exposure, making the skin darker. Hair, on the other hand, is not alive; sun can bleach out the melanin in it which won't be replaced until the hair falls out and a new one grows in. This happens in black hair as well as lighter colored hair but the change isn't as dramatic.
