  • I don't remember ever seeing such a thing in any of the small towns and cities I lived (which are many). *** I've seen it in some large-ish cities, where local public transportation uses trains and where Amtrack has a stop (for embarking and disembarking). *** I also saw it in Disneyland 'way back in 1970, when they were still using a genuine steam locomotive. I expect they're no longer using a genuine steam engine. *** I read a recent BBC News article describing real, still-operating steam engine passenger trains in Wales, with regular routes and paying passengers (both commuters and tourists). The article focused on experiments on "carbon friendly" fuel as a replacement for coal in one particular railroad, but the article indicated that there were several steam-engine-pulled regular (active) passenger services in the region.

  • Amtrak still runs throughout the USA, passing through and stopping at smaller towns all the time. I don't have Amtrack service near me - the closest is around 30 miles away.
