  • No. Back then, there would have been no intention whatsoever of even suggesting a character was gay. Not on a family show like that. The first really openly-gay character on TV was the one played by Billy Crystal on "Soap," and that didn't happen until the late 70s. "The Andy Griffith Show" stopped airing in the late 60s. It was too dated and old-fashioned by then.
