• I think you'd have a difficult time trying to argue that crying is not cathartic. Emotions are like anything else you store in your body, though. If you let them run right through you all of the time, you won't develop any of the machinery necessary to hold them down if you need to; on the other hand, if you only ever hold them inside, you'll eventually burst in an uncontrollable way. So, I think, moderation is the key.
