It probably boils down to the idea that a lot of Germans had after WWI, that Germany was actually winning WWI, except the country was "infiltrated" by Jews from Eastern Europe, who somehow took over primary influence over the government and "sabotaged" the war for Germany. In reality, though, Germany was in an unwinnable position, between the USA entering the war and Germany's allies of the Ottoman Empire and the Austro-Hungarian Empire being thoroughly defeated and the French finally breaking through the front line trenches, and also German fuel reserves and supplies starting to run out - none of which had anything to do with Jews. But, as we see today, little in politics has anything to do with grounded fact.
