Two things: 1. This wasn't a hurricane, it was a derecho. Hurricanes need 75 mph sustained winds to be considered official. The winds from that storm were darn near that, but the highest measured sustained wind was 70 mph. Gusts were recorded of 112 mph, but those don't count on the hurricane scale. Also, the wind from a hurricane has to be cyclonic, and the winds from this storm went in a mostly straight line. They can cause just as much damage, but for a much shorter amount of time, so the total amount of damage over the duration of the storm is far less. If an actual hurricane somehow started over the midwest, it would have been far more devastating than this storm was. 2. That's not to minimize the effects of the storm, though, because Iowa, obviously, is not built to withstand a hurricane.
