  • Although history was unkind to his legacy, he was the president who landed us on the Moon, established the EPA, established diplomatic ties to China, and federalized Medicaid. He also proposed a very popular Family Assistance Plan that would have overhauled welfare and which experts still believe was a good solution to the welfare abuse problem of the early 70's. It should also be noted that he devised a plan to socialize healthcare that failed in congress, but that democrats have been fighting for since 2008. His foreign policy with the USSR was tough yet sneaky, such that we avoided escalation but also managed to maintain firm stances. Overall, I don't think he was nearly as bad as folks tend to think nowadays. But that's just my opinion.
