  • So... you're back here because you lost your porn collection? hahaha!

I was submitting applications at the library with a friend. I was finished but he had more applications to submit. That's why I decided to stop in to answerbag for a while. Don't worry - all my laptop porn was backed up on a flashdrive beforehand.

Were you able to save anything else? Good luck with your job hunt.

A few personal files were also backed up. Still there are some folders that weren't transferred beforehand.

I don't guess that's anything I can help you find online, but if I can help let me know.

Here's a free download, but I've never used it. Good luck! https://www.cleverfiles.com/howto/crashed-hard-drive-recovery.html
  • There are hard drive recovery labs that will attempt to revive the drive if you send it to them.
    • Iron Mask
I've never heard of such places. I don't want to have to mail it off to be repaired. If there was a store I could drive to I would be willing to consider that.

Geek Squad does not have a stellar reputation in that area.
  • It depends. Most likely, yes. It might be as simple as connecting the drive as a slave and moving over the salvageable data. If that doesn't work, you might need some specialized software to do it. If there is physical damage, though, it might be useless.

The hard drive took a jolt. There are three movable arms that go over the data disc inside of a hard drive. One or more of them may have been knocked loose.

Ouch. So, if the head (the magnetic reader at the end of the movable arm, or "actuator arm") crashed into the stack, it is likely that the data on the disk is permanently gone. How important was the data on there? You might still be able to try to recover it, but it'd be costly and low chance of success.

Not very important files. Some of the backed up files were better organized on the laptop.
