  • Great question. It's one of the most enigmatic nicknames. Sometimes it can be a straightforward nickname for Paula or Paulina, but, other times people named Mary or Margaret can go by Polly. Not sure the exact reason, but something to do with M names with r's morphing into Molly, because r's are difficult for very young children to say, and then something about how some children have a tough time with letter M, so they substitute a "P", since it uses the lips.
