The origins were New York State. I know a gal who worked for Tom Carvel at his Hotel/Headquarters. He croaked in 1990 and she found another job. She would get free ice cream all the time.

We have Carvels here. The ice cream is so-so . I think it's more of a kiddie ice cream place than a gourmet ice cream place.

FUDGIE THE WHALE for a whale of a Dad!!

I have. Every birthday cake I had until I was 18 came from there. And Flying Saucers and Cookie-Puss!

They had a couple of locations in the San Fernando Valley when I was growing up in the 1970s. My recollection was that they were somewhat better than Baskin-Robbins, but nothing exceptional. Those locations were closed after a couple of years, although I think I've since seen one or two others in the Southern California area.

I tried it once at a Mets game. I wasn't a big fan... of the game or the ice cream.

When I would go into a Carvel, there is a faint smell of "refrigerant". Also, all the tiles on the walls make me think I am in one big cold bathroom.
-
