  • 6-24-2017 The word is used with so many meanings that you have to be careful to avoid trick questions and smutty jokes. You will know you are getting near a basic meaning when people start calling you a moron.
  • it's the power of the Universe
  • What I know about love is that love is patient, love is kind, it does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud, it does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs, love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes and always perseveres according to Scripture.

I don't know why the newer translations substituted the word love for charity in that scripture but I don't think it means the same thing. And I think the new translation causes confusion because people get it confused with romantic love. Instead of agape love which is what charity is. Still I love that scripture quote! Thank you!

There's nothing wrong with the substitution. The word charity in Greek is agape, which means love: https://www.thoughtco.com/agape-love-in-the-bible-700675

I have a huge problem with it when someone thinks they should tolerate abuse kindly and patiently because they love someone! Its not the same thing at all! Its an insidious translation!

Quote: "I have a huge problem with it when someone thinks" Here is the problem as you said, when someone thinks! Thinking is not a fact until charity is manifested in loving thy neighbor.
    • Linda Joy
Yeah, and love thy neighbor doesn't mean sex, either!
  • Love is the strongest emotion in the universe. Without love none of us would even be here. Without love the Lord God would have removed us all a long time ago.
    • Linda Joy
Most of us are here because of lust not love.
  • not rnuch
  • That you won't be getting any. Come on, straighten up, you walked into that one yourself.
  • I've been looking for love in the wrong places?
  • Love is a feeling from the heart towards another person whether it’s romantic or friendly. Love can be shown through the eyes or as a physical gesture such as a handshake, hug or a kiss. Proper love is about respect.
  • Most people don't know what love is. They confuse it with infatuation. Here's an old Ann Landers article that explains it: "Infatuation is instant desire. It is one set of glands calling to another. Love is friendship that has caught fire. It takes root and grows -- one day at a time. Infatuation is marked by a feeling of insecurity. You are excited and eager but not genuinely happy. There are nagging doubts, unanswered questions, little bits and pieces about your beloved that you would just as soon not examine too closely. It might spoil the dream. Love is quiet understanding and the mature acceptance of imperfection. It is real. It gives you strength and grows beyond you -- to bolster your beloved. You are warmed by his presence, even when he is away. Miles do not separate you. You want him nearer. But near or far, you know he is yours and you can wait. Infatuation says, "We must get married right away. I can't risk losing him." Love says, "Be patient. Don't panic. Plan your future with confidence." Infatuation has an element of sexual excitement. If you are honest, you will admit it is difficult to be in one another's company unless you are sure it will end in intimacy. Love is the maturation of friendship. You must be friends before you can be lovers. Infatuation lacks confidence. When he's away, you wonder if he's cheating. Sometimes you check. Love means trust. You are calm, secure, and unthreatened. He feels that trust, and it makes him even more trustworthy. Infatuation might lead you to do things you'll regret later, but love never will. Love is an upper. It makes you look up. It makes you think up. It makes you a better person than you were before."
