  • A CAT scan uses X-rays an MRI uses magnetic resonance and radio waves. The MRI can map out soft tissue.

My new ear doctor wants me to get an MRI because the CATscan was unrevieling.

Makes sense they would start with the antibiotics first as the most common and inexpensive treatment, then CAT because bones make up most of the working parts in the ear, and is less expensive than the MRI. You're the Marine, right? You don't have to pay for this, right?

Another difference between a Cat Scan and an MRI is that a CAT scan is quick and painless, like an x-ray...while an MRI involves laying perfectly still in what seems like a coffin, while really loud noises assault you and so much magnetism you feel your hair standing. (Not to scare you with that. They did let me chose some music to have in my hearing protection headphones. And I had a mirror so I could see outside the 'coffin'. But it did require being motionless (or else would have to start over again), and it took a long time. (I was having a full body MRI though. A shorter one would be quicker of course. And it is the best way to look for something, they can see a lot more (it makes an image of inside your body "slice by slice" so to speak, so they see EVERYthing..

It wasn't so bad for me, but then they had already shot me up with Dilaudid before they started. Wheeee. .... I had been t-boned in a car accident but they've used it since. Semper Fi!

Both of you have given me helpful and useful information. Thank you both. My problem will be the staying perfectly still part. I'm always squirming because I can never get comfortable enough to stay still.

It's not that bad really. They'll probably only do your head. They did my head once to see if I had a brain. Now I have proof so I don't let anyone call me brainless anymore! No really they were checking for a tumor. I didn't have one of those, thank God!

AB seems to be doing the duplicate comments again. Sorry. Still can't find the frustration category.

I think they hid it on purpose!
