where does the bay leaf come from?

I am sitting here trying to remember the name of the tree bay leaves come from. The tree only grows in two places in the world, Israel and south western Oregon. The wood is also used for wood turning wooden items. I saw this when I was in Oregon back in the 1980s. Maybe someone from Oregon can supply the name of the tree.
