  • Whether they mean to be or not, they are being basically self-centred. This question reminds me of that dodgy lyric in the song "Do They Know It's Christmas". You know, where it goes "Well, tonight thank God it's them instead of you". It's the same basic principle (if "principle" is the right word).
  • They thank him because they have survived...not because others have died.
  • They are glad to have survived and one way they show that gratitude is by thanking God.
  • You see, in that situation those people would realize that a large number of people died. However they didnt't, which would either make them lucky or just better at surviving. So that person is thankling god for letting them personally live in stead of the other 300. So basically they are sort of thinking of themselves.
