  • Air is warmed by touching the ground. The higher it is, the less likely to ever touch the ground.
  • JV is on the right path. Heat moves through three ways: Radiation, conduction, and convection. Air is heated through these three methods. As you know the higher you climb into the atmosphere the less air there is available. The lack of density of air molecules means there is less there to heat. Thus a feeling of cold. Which is actually the lack of heat. That is why it is considered to be very cold in space. No air to hold heat.
