  • It is not common. Most—but not all—of the 117 operating temples throughout the world do not have services at 5 a.m. Members who attend the temple every day need to live very close to the temple. Many members throughout the world wish they could attend the temple more often then they do and a major obstacle to fulfilling this wish is the distance it takes for them to get to the temple. Those who live close to the temple will often go very frequently, including everyday. Those who attend every day may go early in the morning in order to attend a session before their work or school day starts because they wouldn't have any other time during the day.
  • It's actually quite common, and for several reasons: First, you're thinking of Seminary. This is not held at the Temple, but at a regular Ward Building or Stake Center. 5:00a seems like a bit of an exaggeration, so I'll assume you mean 5:45a to 6:00a. It was always said that getting up early made you "healthy, wealthy, and wise", or at least healthy and wise. It also gets the Scriptures in there before the day REALLY hits. Believe you me, I needed it. And the main reason that he wouldn't be the only one is because Seminary greatly helps one's outlook. A non-LDS cousin of mine attended a Seminary session, and he was in a good mood for the rest of the day (may have just been coincidence, but I don't think so).
