The term "Foley artist" is named after Jack Foley, one of the earliest and best-known Hollywood practitioners of the art. Foley began his career in the film industry as a stand-in and screenwriter during the silent era, and later helped Universal make the transition from silent movies to "talkies". from what ive read a foley artist is someone who is responsible for all the sounds in a film eg for Footsteps in snow they Squeeze a box of corn starch etc etc

THey are the people who make noises for movies, they make the sounds of bones breaking, screeching tires, rustling leaves, and more using a whole varity of items on a sound stage.
