There is a particular laundry soap that causes me to break down into tears when I smell it, and the weirdest thing is I have no idea why. I can not remember the exact incident related to it, only that it was emotionally devastating. My neighbor used that laundry soap a few weeks ago, and since the laundry room is fairly close to me, I had to spend about 3 hours with that smell. It was awful. I felt this sense of fear, dread, anger and sadness. And I was racking my brain trying to figure out what happened to me to make me feel like that, so I could get some resolution. Smell is processed in the amygdala, the part of the brain's limbic system, which is directly connected to the emotions we feel. It sounds really silly that the smell of a laundry soap could make me feel such horrible things.
