He was killed on 27 September 1986 in a bus accident. The band had just left Stockholm, Sweden to get to their next performance.

Cliff Burton drew cards with Kirk Hammet to see which bunk to sleep on in the tour bus, Cliff drew the Ace of Spades, (the death card) and history follows. The bus driver fell asleep while driving in the snow, crashed, throwing Cliff half way out the window, next to his bunk, and the bus landed on him, killing him.

Cliff Burton Rules I saw him last week. he wanted a nice way to leave metallica cause he knew that in a number of years they'd make a feature length documentary about their "feelings" and they'd cry alot and he didn't want to be a part of that nipple twisting so he faked his own death and now he only plays on studio albums. hahaha i thought that was pretty funny no disrespect intended to cliff though

On the tour bus the beds were very uncomfortable so they had a game of cards to decide who would get the best bed. Burton won with the ace of spades, as curious mind already stated; the card of death. During the night the bus skidded on black ice and burton fell through the window and the bus landed on him. A horrific yet sadly ironic death. James Hetfield later stated that he first believed the bus flipped because the driver was drunk, or at least negligent, and had walked long distances down the road demanding this "black ice" be shown to him.

No disrespect intended toward this mortal named Cliff Burton, however he did ask for this. You can hear his own voice on a certain track asking "can not the kingdom of heaven take me away". Be careful what you ask for when you include heaven in your words. See you on judgement day friend. Reaper.

He was thrown through a Tour Bus window while sleeping...he probably awoke but not for long :( He and Kirk had some sort of game and Cliff won and got the "Comfy" bed
