  • The Church reports that English is the most popular at 5,620,000 (2001 stats) and Spanish is the second most popular at 3,465,000. However, these statistics give no indication if these numbers also include those who speak multiple languages or if they constitute only mother tongues. So they may be different depending on the context. FYI, the top ten languages are English, Spanish, Portuguese, Tagalog, Cebuano, Japanese, Ilokano, Samoan, Korean and Tongan. Again this is based on 2001 statistics. Interestingly enough, in September 2000, Jay Todd, Managing Editor of the Ensign, published an article where he stated: "English is projected to continue as the largest language group in the Church for about two more decades. Spanish is presently the second largest language group in the Church, with about 3.3 million Spanish-speaking members. Sometime around the year 2020, however, based on present membership growth rates, Spanish is projected to be the largest language group in the Church, with English being second."
  • As of beginning of 2004, or thereabouts, Spanish was the language spoken by the majority of church members. There are now more members outside of the U.S. than there are inside.

  • ?? Some people speak this or that language and some speak several. Church membership has nothing to do with it. What were you actually trying to ask?
