Actually people these days are pretty aware that life is tricky, and so don't fool easy. But sometimes a so-called expert is most easy to fool. That is why a science person looking at magic and trickery is actually a poor way to say something must be real. The think A leads to B, and don't get it that some slight of hand, out of sight is doing C. I've even seen often times when people fool theirself; wishful thinking gone a bit to far. For your teacher, the What if, and How come questions usually do it.
