Actually, when Leo Gerstenzang invented them in the early 1920s, they were called "Baby Gays". In 1926, they were renamed "Q-Tips Baby Gays". Eventually, it was shortened to just "Q-Tips". Apparently, the "Q" stands for "quality".

Q-Tips were a long time in development. After repeated failures with A-Tips, B-Tips, C-Tips, all the way through P-Tips, the engineers finally got it right. It was a similar story with Preparation H.
