Just so you know..... The free Office Suite OpenOffice (available for Windows as well as being part of most Linux installs) has the ability to save any document in PDF format.

If you already have Microsoft Word, there is a plug in that allows you to save/convert documents as PDF. Acrobat doesn't even allow you to open .doc or .txt files. If you don't have MS Word and don't feel like installing a whole new Office suite then go here: http://www.primopdf.com/ It's specifically for the purpose you need.

Microsoft Office charges for what openoffice.org gives for free. If you download it, you can change the documents automatically to PDF, as there is a button on top of the screen. Also, openoffice is open source material, allowing you to pull it apart if you could, and learn how it works, unlike microsoft, and has formatting that allows to save as microsoft documents, and yet, microsoft can't open openoffice documents if not saved as microsoft. So ultimately, openoffice.org is better many times over.

Two words . . . Primo PDF

Depends what you mean by "regular files". The cheapest is PDF Creator, free from http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator It allows you to "print" to a PDF file. Alternatively, use OpenOffice.org which allows you to save any document to PDF.
