Dealing with acne during pregnancy can be a challenge, since some of the most popular treatments can put your baby at risk. Although several acne treatments can lead to birth defects, Accutane is the only medication linked to miscarriages.
About Accutane
Isotretinoin, also known by the brand name Accutane, is an oral medication used to treat moderate to severe cystic acne. According to the Mayo Clinic, it is usually only used when all other treatments have failed.
Category X
Accutane is considered a "Category X" medicine by the Food and Drug Administration, which means it is never save for use during pregnancy. Accutane earned this classification because of its links to miscarriage and severe birth defects.
Pregnancy Prevention Program
Accutane manufacturer Roche and the FDA launched the Pregnancy Prevention Program (PPP) in 1988. Information packets were sent to doctors to review with patients that detailed the risks associated with using Accutane while pregnant and advice about contraception.
Regulations
Before you get an Accutane prescription, you must take a pregnancy test and start the medication on the second or third day of your next period. You must also agree to use two forms of contraception for the month before starting treatment through one month after stopping.
Warnings
If you are taking Accutane and think you may be pregnant, see your doctor immediately.
