<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Pyruvate aids weight loss
Pyruvate is an organic molecule involved in metabolism and producing energy in the body. Pyruvate in capsule form can be used as a supplement to increase your metabolism to help you burn fat and lose weight. A dose of 30 grams of pyruvate a day used to be the accepted amount for this purpose, but it was reported in the 1993 issue of the American Journal of Physiology that only 6 grams a day may be necessary if you combine the dose with an exercise program.
On the Other: Pyruvate has side effects
Although pyruvate can be effective for burning fat for weight loss, it can also create unpleasant side effects when taken in large amounts. Side effects include upset stomach, diarrhea and bloating. Research also showed that when women took 10 grams a day, their good cholesterol, HDL, went down.
Bottom Line
Given the continuing questions about the effective dosage level, start with a program of pyruvate supplements of 6 grams a day to avoid the expense and risk of side effects of high doses. This leaves you room to adjust the dose.
