  • Ionization decreases as you move down the group because as you go down a group there are more principal quantum levels. There are more electrons separating the valence electrons from the nucleus. This makes it easier to remove an electron from an element at the bottom of the group than at the top because the valence electrons are being shielded by the other electron shells.
