  • I can not help you overcome the feeling, since that feeling is the truth. Embrace the truth. There IS no intrinsic value to things on this Earth. True wealth lies after this life.
  • Are there courses in photonics available yet?
  • Nothing you learn has permanent value. I'm a computer programmer and designer, and the things I learn often last less than a year before they're supplanted. You have to keep yourself up to scratch with the latest developments. Having said that, photonics will not arrive overnight.
  • A few things for you to keep in mind: 1. When a new technology supplants an older one, there is a transition period where both technologies are still in use. 2. In almost every field, new developments happen on a continuing basis. The key is to continue learning and remain adaptable. 3. The process of learning in most fields changes much more slowly than does the things learned. Learning how to deal with current technologies prepares you for learning how to deal with future technologies.
  • In the short to medium-term, photonics will only be used for information transmission (just as it is used today). Electronics will continue to be used for anything that requires significant amounts of energy to operate. Furthermore, many of the engineering principles used in electronic devices will be applicable to photonic devices (I used to joke that, to an engineer, life is a second-order partial differential equation...;-D..)
