  • For me it is over hype. I am always disappointed. I rather something be panned and be pleasantly surprised.
  • I don't listen to the critics. then again, I don't listen to the masses either. I have only had one coworker whos movie advice I could completely trust. we had different tastes but he understood mine so if he advised me to see a movie I knew I would enjoy it.
  • I read reviews for not just the "love" or "hate", but the details in between. And I read specific reviewers for that. I don't end up liking or disliking a film because it didn't live up the "hype"--I get upset when elements that a reviewer talked about, in whatever way, aren't there, or I think the reviewer sadly misunderstood those elements. I get annoyed when I go see a movie that isn't a good movie because people love it, but it doesn't change how I watch the movie or my opinion of it. And it's interesting to discuss with critics why they liked something, why they didn't bother. For me, I'll get to see the movie. It doesn't matter if it was hypercritized, it probably didn't affect whether or not I chose to see it, and if it did, if it is good, I'll get around to it sooner or later. It sounds like wishful or foolish thinking, but I generally do. I suppose overhype affects me more because I have bought tickets based on others' opinion/hype, and it's been a waste of money. I think when something is really, really, hyped and hyped, I end up avoiding it. It's like a song you like being so overplayed that you can't listen to it for years. And that's bad too. I do end up seeing movies like that years later, once people have stopped shrieking at anything and everything related to the movie, and I often enjoy the movie then. But enormous hype kinda takes that possibility away at the time. So, I'd say overhype is worse.
  • It really depends on the temperament of the artist. For some, overhype makes them think they're better than they actually are. For others it's a validation of their abilities. Criticism may crush someone's delicate faith in themselves, others will take notes and improve their craft.
