  • Because they taught Jesus Christ. Here is christians who are persecuted today.Go read foxe's book of Martyrs. http://www.persecution.com
  • Well, NICK, wasn't there a kinda standard 'bill of fare' when it came to method(s) of torture? - And "why"? My guess? = Because they were different and attracting others, therefore politically threatening to the then-current power brokers? - Happy days, dude! - ;-)
  • Depends on how early you mean, but the answer is often the same. Around 1700 BC, the Egyptians made the Christians their slaves and kept them that way for 400 years. The Pharaoh even commanded that all male Israelites be killed at birth (http://scriptures.lds.org/ex/1). In about 82 BC, a group of Christians and their holy records were burned to death while the prophets that converted them were forced to watch (http://scriptures.lds.org/alma/14). In the first century A.D., Christians were often killed. Jesus Christ Himself was crucified in about AD 33, and his successor as president, Simon Peter, was supposedly crucified upside-down in about AD 64. Fast-forward to US history, and you’ve got the Latter-day Saints. In the 1830s and ’40s, they were repeatedly tarred and feathered, raped, driven from their homes (which were then stolen or burned), falsely imprisoned in squalid conditions, and even murdered in cold blood. In 1838, the governor of Missouri went so far as to declare baptism into the Church of Jesus Christ to be a capital offense punishable by death, forcing them to abandon their homes and move to Illinois. By 1846, several Apostles had been shot and/or killed and the Saints were forced to leave the USA for their own safety. So yeah… we’ve been persecuted from time to time. As for why? The same reason religions are always persecuted: it’s perceived as a threat. :-s

Interesting and fairly accurate except there were no Christians in 1700 BC. Christians did not appear until after the death of Jesus Christ.
  • A lot less than what they claim. Because they were the new kid on the block who preached against the power of the state. Rabblerousers. http://www.jesusneverexisted.com/persecutions.html
  • Just like any persecution. Some politician came up with some half assed excuse to round them up.
  • They were persecuted because they were going against mainstream religion and were often used in the colussuem games in Rome involving lions and tigers. Also, in some places, Christians could not own property or participate in political affairs.
  • Nero blamed them for the burning of Rome. He also took them and covered them in tar, strapped them to poles and set them on fire while still alive to use as torches at his parties. They were crucified, hung, mutilated in the arena, beheaded. In the dark and middle ages you were tortured and killed for not being Catholic. It's not a very often reported fact, but Hitler actually killed more Christians than Jews in the concentration camps. The persecution that goes on in Communist and Muslim countries today never gets reported but it is worse than any other form of genocide in the past.
  • Death and imprisonment. They were often attacked for their refusal to worship the state and empire.
