You've probably seen the letters "HTML" while browsing the web and wondered what they mean. They're short for "hypertext markup language," one of the many languages used in computer programming.
Definition
HTML is the universal programming language for transmitting various types of data, images and objects to the web. It is the code for creating webpages.
History
The history of HTML dates back to the 1980s, when physicist Tim Berners-Lee proposed how information could be managed and easily transferred to the web via "hypertext." Over time, software developers refined his work into what we now see as the point-and-click system of the web.
Function
HTML tells your browser how the webpage should appear. It also allows certain parts of a website, such as images, words or phrases, to be "clickable" and be linked to other websites.
Components
HTML codes are enclosed by angle brackets, < and >, and usually have beginnings and endings. For example, if you wanted your text to appear in bold, you would enclose it with the HTML state code <b> and end code </b>.
Standards
The World Wide Web Consortium is an international organization that sets HTML standards. It seeks to make the Web more usable by ensuring faster loading, accessibility and compatibility among web-related products.

It means hyper text markup language. For email it means you can use different size and color fonts. In plain text you cannot.
