Even though it's heresy to say so, the world and America in particular don't suck nearly as bad as people for some reason want to believe.

We should be happy for what we have or we'll never be happy with anything further we get. We tend to be negative natured so we are our own worst enemy at times. +5

No. I actually think that much distress comes from that belief, that happiness is an entitlement. Any true freedom and peace will probably come when we let go of expectations of how we're supposed to feel and what life is supposed to look like.

In the western world, most everyone is as happy as they choose to be. Just look at the oppression people in other parts of the world have to make peace with and you'll understand what I'm saying.

Perhaps, but it is pointless to say, "I should (not) feel the way I do." The fact of the matter is that one does feel that way. Citing moral or social obligations might make a person change for a little while, but it won't be permanent. We have to see a need for the change and then make the decision to do it on our own. I wasn't always a happy person, but it didn't help me to hear that I should change because God said so, or because I was better off than such-and-such person. What helped me was the realization that by being in a funk all the time, I was annoying my own d@mn self. I realized that if I didn't develop a more positive (but still realistic) perspective, I'd drive myself crazy. Some people have to get tired of a situation before they'll change it.
