In the case of Michael Jackson, the reasons are quite clear. He was known to be a compulsive shopper and spender and blew through money at an absolutely staggering rate. No matter how much money he made, he could spend it faster. He was perilously close to bankruptcy at the time of his death despite having had huge assets at various times, including the rights to the entire Beatles catalog. Now that he's dead, the money is no longer being spent faster than it comes in, so his estate can finally grow.

Because their estate can make more money from renewed interest of their careers and possible new scandals after they die. It's like a star that never fades.
