  • I work as a photo-retoucher for a large, old printing firm. At the moment I work on site at the headquarters of a department store. My department oversees photography, photo-retouching and production of this department store's printed advertising. It pays roughly $30 an hour to do retouching but there are frequently many hours of overtime involved so my income is sqewed upawards from that. So safely I could say between $70k and $124K depending on one's drive. My education was one in art and design. I was not sure what I would end up doing after my BFA. I worked like a beast as a junior graphic designer then as a senior with no real shift in my earnings over a period of 12 years. Retouching pays far better and it generally paid by the hour. My goal is now to become more of an expert that teaches others. It would allow me to work fewer hours though I would have to travel to do demos. I think it would be fun. In spite of this career I still pursue my art, design and photography all while raising a family. Retouching is a great career for artists who are floating and need income with relatively little extra to learn.
