Poseidon. I think the Trident was where it came from. I think Poseidon had something to do with the underworld and the dead. I remember reading something like that and them saying that was where the devil's pitchfork came from. His trident.

The goat's hind legs and tail come from Pan, who in classical mythology also had horns. The pitchfork is not a pitchfork, it's a trident (fishing harpoon), and comes from Poseidon. Early Christians were a very confused lot :)

In the early Christian churches numerous attempts to demonise & discredit Pagan beliefs they simply lifted poor old Poseidon’s trident & dumped it into the devils hands.... demonisation by association.
