  • I was never much of a believer, but years ago the first time I met someone who declared themself an atheist I was somewhat taken aback. This was in a social setting and she was pretty bold to make a statement of her unbelief. After the initial shock people just seemed to forget about her viewpoint. I found myself eyeballing her a bit; yup, she seemed quite normal.. nothing weird, but I never got a chance to chat up with her. One guy invited me to his church because he thought I'd make a good Christian. He didn't like it at first when I told him I was an atheist and why I was. Anyway he and no one else bugs me, in fact more people agree with me but are reluctant to declare themself an atheist.. maybe agnostic though.
  • It doesn't freak me out. Whether I agree with you or not .. I admire you for speaking your mind.
  • Oh my god, why?! Think of the children! Just kidding. They probably can't handle the fact that someone has an opinion contrary to theirs.
  • Perhaps, everyone--MINUS one. Whatever floats your boat...
  • Try the UK, people would wonder why you bothered telling them. I only know a few people who go to curch other than for wedings etc, so you wouldn't stand out.
  • Because people have grown so accustomed to people having a faith (even if it's not their own) that it's more strange to have no faith then to just have a different one. I consider myself an agnostic that leans atheist. The best evidence, I think, to explain the origins of humanity is one that uses actual evidence and not a book written by people who would be declared schizophrenic by today's standards.
  • Its not unusual in the UK. I only get freaked-out-at online, by Americans.
  • Doesn't freak me out.
  • Where I live, atheist is a swear word, and a lot of people don't even know what one is. I've encountered some people who genuinely thought atheists worship Satan. Then again, I do live in a place called the Bible belt. I know very few people who aren't devoutly religious. Also, I think the idea of atheism scares some people, so they're shocked when they encounter someone who is capable of being an atheist.
  • because your a strong positive person that dosn't rely on anyone. FIGHT ON!
  • They know that no amount of evangelizing will suffice to "convert" you.
  • By strong and positive do you mean that you have certitude that no god exists? I don't think a god exists given the evidence, but I think it is impossible to be certain about such a question.
  • No idea. Perhaps you just happen to live among a lot of Christians. . In what way do they 'freak out'?
  • Those who need the crutch of faith to be strong and positive resent those who are strong enough in their own right not to.
  • Aaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh. A Free Thinker!!! Hide the women and children!!!
  • Because atheists are generally negative, cynical and angry, as shown here on AB.
  • That's not true. I am happy that you are strong and positive. Maybe they are jealous of you. Many theists are probably struggling trying to figure out why their Gods neglect them while allowing the enemies of their Gods to be strong.
  • I'm not freaked out but I am annoyed. Not because you're an atheist, mind you. I'm annoyed that you so identify with atheism that you feel the need to advertise it. So you're an atheist (Christian, nazi, spiritualist, etc). Have a cookie. Go away.
  • Because atheists fall into the same category as devil worshipers to some people.
  • maby they think that you may say somthing that will make them think about the strength of their own faith and find it faulty... FEAR...
  • My experience is that they view you as a threat to their beliefs. I am agnostic. I get have had religious persons freak out when I point out descrepencies in their religion.
  • You mistakenly think that people care.
  • Not everyone.
  • I don't care what people think of my atheism.. If they freak out I freak right back at them and make them show me their god. Whereis the big fuck anyway? Hiding behind a Bush somewhere?
  • It sounds very in-your-face and I'm also not sure exactly what it means - does it mean you are a strong and positive individual who is also an atheist, or that you are strong and positive about your atheism?
  • Not freaked out
  • Does not freack me out.
