No it made the Nobel committee look like idiots. Obama has not EARNED it. It has also devalued the award in my honest opinion.

I'm extremely happy for the President! And, I agree with the Nobel Prize committee that he is encouraging the world to go in the right direction and inspiring the hope that will assure success.

Happy for him? Sure I am happy for anyone that wins. I am a bit puzzled by it as well although I have to say it is an indication of how President Obama is regarded internationally. Having a president that well regarded cannot be a bad thing for this country.

It means about as much as the bogus prize they gave Jimmy Carter a few years ago. I could see it if he'd won thirty years ago for getting Begin and Sadat to the table, but the prize they gave him was agenda laden and meant to snub George Bush, which made it meaningless and cheap. This one is about the same. Obama has done nothing to earn it yet, and the Nobel prize committee is just using it to further their agenda. A few more like that and no one will have any respect for a Nobel prize anymore. It used to mean something. It used to be the culmination of a lifetime of achievement.

Nobody seems to know exactly what Obama has done to achieve it. The whole gesture seems premature. At least if Chuck Norris had won, we could have seen his films as proof.

The guy hasn't done anything to deserve it. The only things that he has done in his approximately 9 months in office is hock our future for failed economic programs and blame George W. Bush for anything that doesn't go his way. This must be their apology for not buying his pitch for the Olympics in Chicago.

I really have no clue what he did to deserve it. I mean, it's great if other countries have slightly less desire to kill us Americans now because of it, but it really seems a bit sketchy as to how and why he was given such a prestigious honor for... well... not doing anything. Last I checked, we are still engaged in foreign wars and it's still business as usual for our uber-powerful militaristic federal government, so where's all that "peace" that is supposed to elicit the award of the Nobel Peace Prize?

First, I recall that Henry Kissinger was awarded the same prize. So I'm not sure how much it means. Second, I'd like to know who makes these decisions. Does anyone know the names of the people on the committee that makes the award?

i've been happy for every winner of the peace prize. sometimes i think (gulp) that nixon was the mastermind behind the peace process and the novel prize should have gone to him rather than kissinger. obama has much to live up to!!!

Well, it's kind of like giving someone the Superbowl MVP trophy after just one quarter of play. He actually may end up deserving the award, but you don't know for sure until the game is completed. It kind of dilutes the specialness of the award, doesn't it?

It's great news for ABers. Now there's no reason to stop even the newest members of AB from winning the Pulitzer Prize for journalism... As someone who contributed a lot of time working on Obama's campaign, I think an Oscar would have been far more appropriate. David Plouffe and David Axelrod should also be awarded for best screenplay. A year ago, I never thought "change" would mean so many homeless and jobless people on our streets begging for it. The campaign switched from "Yes! We Can! last November to "Yes! I Can, But You Cannnot!" in February. By the Town Hall Meeting on March 26, on-line supporters got their thanks with Obama's surprisingly immature response to the question on the prospect of revenue-generating medical marijuana. It was the first time I remember a U.S. president joking in the face of medical illness. It wasn't the last. Obama bombed out bigtime on the the healthcare issue, as well. But as for winning the Nobel Peace Prize, I don't see how any leader who has spread an existing war (from Afghanistan to Pakistan) and has no medals or trophies for peace can be selected for such high honor. As you read this, someone in your area is being subjected to undue brutal violence by law enforcement in the war on drugs (even though Gil Kerlikowske has suggested that we not refer to the brutality of our drug policy as a "war")... For whatever it's worth, it's becoming much easier to understand why the Mayian calender ends in 2012.

I think Obama knows it was an idiotic move and now the Nobel Peace prize committee knows it was an idiotic move. Obama communicated that nonverbally when he accepted it and the committee commented on his reaction and then, for the first time in history, started explaining why they awarded it.

The last date for nobel prize nomination was february 1 2009. And he won the prize???? for peace. So it must be for whatever he did before feb 2009. Can you believe this?

I kind of like the "reason" they gave it to him, i.e. his desire to open dialogue for the purpose of working out international grievences or whatever. But I agree with many responders here that Mr. Obama hasn't really done enough to merit the honor; the committee's reason was that Mr. Obama created a more peaceful world environment???? Talk versus actions - real or anticipated. If Mr. Obama continues work toward international peace during and after his presidency, then by all means. I think the committee in Oslo jumped the gun
