  • 1-4-2017 Is this a house? I mean not an apartment or duplex? That's important.Assuming it's a house, you shut off your water and open a faucet at the lowest point you can identify. Wait until all the water has drained out. It speeds the process if you also open a faucet at the highest point you can identify. Many houses have a faucet in the attic just for that purpose. When you are sure the entire house has drained, close the faucets and turn on the water. Search "water hammer" for an explanation. The second possibility is that the ground under your house makes noise. That is called settling, and it can make surprisingly realistic sounds for centuries without the house settling enough to measure. I once owned a house that made a noise exactly like somebody with big feet running under the kitchen window every afternoon.
