It was a huge relief when it dawned on me that the all-powerful, all-knowing, invisible spirits flitting about the universe were invented by humans to explain the things they couldn't understand--just as Deus ex machina was contrived in classical Greek and Roman drama to perform tasks that couldn't be performed any other way. In sum, humans invented gods to explain the things they couldn't explain any other way.

I don't feel much different now, as an atheist, than I did when I was a Catholic. All I did was follow the idea of a god to it's logical conclusion. It wasn't like a big revelation for me or anything. My atheism has just slowly evolved over a period of 10 years. I barely even noticed it.

At the risk of sounding pompous I would say enlightened. I have been an atheist since I was about 12 years old, though I had strong doubts before this as when I was younger I used to question the bible in bible class as even then to me it just did not add up. I got into trouble for it, but was never given answers and did not have any other knowledge to draw any other conclusions from. I remember well the days upon days of talking to a friend who helped me to gain a better picture of things, and after a period of transition remember feeling so clad that there was no god that allowed all the bad things to happen and that there was no hell waiting for those who slipped up. Without god, there is hope for everyone.

That is a difficult question to answer, I, like most people, do not go around feeling 'how I feel' all the time. And even if I did, I still would not know how you feel being a Christian, so I would in any case be unable to give an answer relating to your experience. I could give you some vague generality like "it feels like being human". but that is hardly a satisfying answer. Some atheists are paranoid, they feel afraid. Some Christians are paranoid, they too feel afraid. I think that kind of factors matter a lot more than whether you are theist or atheist. regards JakobA

I am not an atheist. However, I feel good as a believer, knowing, that: If I believe in god and I die, but he does not exist and neither do Heaven and Hell, I have lost nothing. However, if I don't believe in god and he and his Heaven do exist, then I will die and go to Hell, then I have lost everything and I will burn in a pit of fire for ever! So being a believer is a win win situation.

I am neither Atheist nor do I follow an actual religion. I only sit and ponder what may be the divine, but at the same time I acknowledge that there may be no god(s). Even if there were not a god, I can't say that my beliefs makes me feel any differently. I'm still the same lazy, happy-go-lucky guy I've always been, regardless of what faith I may choose or disregard.

It's a relief to acknowledge that stories about Jesus are about as believable as stories about the tooth fairy. Everything becomes clear.

Never really thought about it BUT I do know of people who were brought up to believe and then crashed into reality with psychologically damaging agony at some point in their lives. So I know I do fee very glad that I have always been an atheist and didn't have to go through the painful wake-up call that ex believer atheists had to handle. I had a half religious, half atheistic 'make your own mind up kid' upbringing and that meant no nasty shocks. I feel enlightened I guess but I feel sad for those who 'got it' late and had to go through the hell of 'losing' God.

On a subzero sunday morning outside, and I'm snuggled up to my wife in a nicely warm bed- it's 'heavenly'.

I'm not an atheist, but I imagine that it feels very much like a theist. Obviously they believe their views are correct, and many of them feel more "enlightened" as a result, however, I think that theists feel the same way in general... I know that I do.

It feels as though a tremendous burden has been lifted off of me! It feels empowering and liberating! It just feels fuckin great! :)
