  • The literal definition of eggnog is "eggs inside a small cup." Traditionally, eggnog has been used to toast health, to welcome in the New Year, and to show thanks for blessings received. Originally, eggnog was a drink for upperclass Englishmen. Those who could afford milk and eggs often mixed them with brandy or sherry to produce a beverage that required no refrigeration. In the late 19th century, the drink traveled to North America, where eggs and milk were plentiful. As rum made it's way from the Caribbean for the first time, the recipe changed. Today, egg nog is enjoyed in almost every country around the world. * CLASSIC EGG NOG (Serves 4) 6 eggs 1/4c sugar 1/4t salt 1qt. milk 1t vanilla Beat eggs, sugar and salt together. Stir in 2 cups milk and transfer to stove. Over low heat, warm mixture, stirring constantly. When mixture has thickened (or reaches 160-degrees), remove from heat. Stir in remaining milk and the vanilla. Cover and refrigerate until well chilled.
