It depends on how the whole ceremony is being handled. Some people have catered affairs while others do a pot luck. When in doubt keep something non-perishable in the car. I generally send flowers with a card included.

it depends on where you live and how your community works. In my parent's rural community in the US, everybody still brings food, helps with ranch work. sometimes they even make the casket, dress the body, and dig the grave. THis has stopped in most cities, but even now in my community, lots of food gets brought in.

Sometime i take food and give my sympathy and moral support.

It is easier to join the church in providing food for the family. It seems a better way to show respect than trying to find something that isn't offensive to say to them.

I take food -- usually some type of a casserole dish. I'll make something that can be frozen and put it in a container I don't need to worry about getting back. That way they have the option of having it now or later.
